Martin L. Hatfield Pulaski County Attorney

Martin Hatfield is a lifelong resident of the Nancy community in western Pulaski County — a place that instilled in him a deep sense of duty, community, and public service that has defined his entire career. He currently serves as the elected Pulaski County Attorney, bringing to the office more than five decades of legal experience and an unwavering commitment to the citizens he proudly represents.

As County Attorney, Martin oversees the prosecution of criminal and juvenile matters in District Court, child support enforcement, delinquent tax collections, and cold check enforcement. He also serves as legal counsel to the Pulaski County Fiscal Court and the County Judge/Executive on matters of county government and public administration — ensuring that the rule of law guides every decision made on behalf of Pulaski County's citizens.

Before taking office as County Attorney, Martin distinguished himself as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky, a position he held for sixteen years. During that time, he managed the London field office and was hand-selected by the U.S. Department of Justice to assist in training new federal prosecutors from across the nation — a testament to his expertise, professionalism, and reputation among his peers. His service with the DOJ earned him numerous Special Act and Service Awards from the Department of Justice, U.S. Attorneys, and federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies in recognition of his outstanding dedication to the citizens of Kentucky and the United States.

Prior to his federal service, Martin spent four and a half years as an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney for Pulaski and Rockcastle Counties, where he first established his foundation of vigorous, principled advocacy on behalf of the Commonwealth.

Martin's academic journey is a reflection of his roots. A proud graduate of Nancy High School, he went on to earn his degree from Somerset Community College before transferring to Eastern Kentucky University, and ultimately earning his law degree from the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law.

His commitment to public life extends well beyond the courtroom. Over a career spanning more than 40 years, Martin has served on numerous boards, committees, and civic organizations — earning recognition at the local, state, and national levels for his leadership and dedication to community. He is the son of the late Avery and Lois Hatfield, and remains deeply rooted in the community that shaped him.

Martin and his wife, Debbie — a retired kindergarten teacher with her own legacy of service — have been married for more than 30 years. They are the proud parents of two daughters who have each followed paths of service in their own right. Their eldest, Mackenzie, pursued a career in law enforcement and serves as a Special Agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. Their youngest daughter, Madison, followed in her mother's footsteps and teaches at Science Hill Independent School.
